No War with Iran-Peace in the Middle East
Task Force on the Americas Solidarity Statement
January 11, 2020
The Task Force on the Americas (TFA), a 35-year old human rights organization, calls for no war with Iran and peace in the Middle East. We condemn the provocative actions of the US government in the murderous drone attack on Iran’s General Qassem Soleimani, Iraq’s Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and others in Baghdad along with the deployment of more US troops in the region. These activities are in violation of international law. Likewise, we oppose the surveilling and detaining of Iranians in the US.
TFA joins the many millions of people of good will across the world in calling for the de-escalation of warlike activities and non-interference by the US in the Middle East:
- Withdraw occupying US troops
- Lift all US economic sanctions
- Lift the domestic Muslim Ban
While TFA is a solidarity organization focused on Latin America and the Caribbean, we understand that our mission cannot be insular. We take the lead from progressives in our Americas in understanding that this instance of the US projecting imperial power in the Middle East has reverberations in our hemisphere. There is a repeated pattern by the US government of disregard for the rights of nations for independence, sovereignty, and self-determination, whether it is in the Middle East or Latin America. The TFA stands in support of a multilateral world free from the domination of the US empire.
As humanitarians, it is our responsibility to oppose the use by the US of crippling economic sanctions on people’s everywhere. These unilateral coercive measures are a form of warfare by economic means, whether they are against Iran or against Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba.
The interests of peace with justice are universal.
